Lacy wins at Dartford as Durrant smashes 1500m barrier

Dartford Half Marathon

Dean Lacy ran to an emphatic victory at the scorching hot Dartford Half Marathon.

Winning by over two minutes, Lacy won in a time of 1 hour 12 minutes and 23 seconds.

Other Cambridge Harriers competing in the race this year were stalwarts of the road running section. Pater Hadley (149th in 1:46:30), Dave Steel (167, 1:47:38), Alex Hall (148, finisihing alongside Dave) , Dave Fisher running in the race for the 29th year in a row (229, 1:52:11), Steve Perfect (347, 2:02:28), Les Pullen (392, 2:07:15), and Gerald Reeve (397, 2:07:15),.

BMC Grand Prix Solihul

Joe Durrant became the latest member of the sub 3m 50secs club, when competing in the latest BMC grand prix at Solihull on Saturday, writes Ray Daniel.

Placed in the C race, Joe followed the pacemaker through 2mins at 800 before taking over with 500m to go. He pushed on with a lead of 10m passing 1200m in 3mins.

Tiring slightly in the closing stages, he maintained his lead and pushed on narrowly missing out on a sub 3m 47 clocking, finishing with 3m 47.10, a personal best by just over 5 seconds. Hopefully he will have a few more opportunities this season to lower this time even further.

English Schools Championships

Day 1

There were mixed fortunes for the club’s athletes competing at the English Schools championships in Birmingham over the weekend.

In the field Anesa Wanogho threw just 3 cm short of her best to take silver in the Under 20 shot with 12.46.

On the track the club’s sprinters fared well. David Bolarinwa eased his way through the heats of the Under 17 boys 100 with the fastest time of the day. Daryl Neita took a comfortable second place in her 100m heat in 12.68 a time which turned out to be the third fastest of the qualifiers in the under 15 age group.

Ruth Onyekwe qualified as a fastest loser for the Under 17 Girls 100 as did Melissa Owusu Ansah in the Under 17 girls 300m.

Omari Markland Montgomery, Tamar Beckford and Sophie Parkes however were not as successful both having to bow out in the heats against very strong opposition

Day 2

The club added gold and bronze to its medal collection with both coming in the 100m event.

David Bolarinwa fulfilled his billing as probably the hottest favourite of the championship by wining the 100m with ease in 10.78. In contrast Daryl Neita had just hoped to make the semi finals but progressed her pb in each round running 12.62 in the semi and then an electric 12.45 to take third and indeed almost second in the final.

In the 400 Hurdles event Gabriella Ade Onojobi had her customary slow start but made up ground toward the end and set a pb though was not quite quick enough to make the final. Charlie Perry also set a pb in the heat but did make the final and then despite having to run from lane 8 stormed round to a great new pb and indeed club record of 55.88 to take 6th spot in a very competitive final.

Back with the sprints Ruth Onyekwe took 6th place in the 100m semi but a slight thigh strain meant she couldn’t run her best and she did not qualify of the final. In the Under 17 girls 300m Melisa Owusu Ansah improved on her heat time and set a slight pb but unfortunatley had to settle for 8th place in the final. Richard Edwardes Triple Jump didn’t go quite to plan as a back spasm following a big hop meant he could only jump 12.32 in the Triple Jump and had to bow out after only two rounds

Race for Life

Several Cambridge Harriers took part in the Cancer Research Race for Life on Blackheath last weekend, in memory of illustious club member Pat Kippax, who sadly passed away last year.

Hazel Ryder takes up the story, "All of us who took part in memory of Pat finished together (The Girls, including my daughter in law & granddaughter, Helen, kindly waited for me!)

We walked the Course, led by Marilyn Neufville, Joan Allison, Glynis Penny, Pauline Boorman, Marlow Hadley,

Rob, Pat’s godson, took photos which should be available soon. We thought we looked very smart in our T Shirts although some did wear them back to front!"

Please support the cause by giving generously in memory of Pat www.justgiving.com
