Sunday Summary - 4 July 2010
A Team go one better
British League
The Club’s A Team competed in the 2nd British League Division 2 fixture at Kingston on Saturday and improved slightly taking 7th place instead of 8th that they achieved at Derby last month
Joe Durrant and Andy Sheridan bolstered the squad immensely with Joe winning both the A String 800 and 1500m whilst Andy took 3rd and 5th in the equivalent B strings. Rob McDonald proved a good back up to Dean Lacy in the Steeplechase taking 3rd place in the B String in his debut run over the distance.
In the Sprints the team welcomed David Bolarinwa’s contribution wining the A String 100 and helping the relay team to a much improved 4th place.
On the field Craig Lacy had a busy day setting pb’s in the Discus and Shot and picking up good points in the Javelin and Hammer. Andy Kruszewski added points in the Discus and shot whilst Team Manger Mick Bond pb’ in the Hammer and took 5th spot in the B String
In the Jumps Tola Elebiju had a good British League debut jumping 6.34 and 1.78 in the Long and High Jumps
Overall however, the team had too many gaps with no hurdlers or Pole Vaulters and despite scoring 63 more points than in Derby, only moved up one place. There are however two more matches to go and the team now ventures to Derby on July 31st to try and improve even further

English Schools and London Youth games
A few of our younger members represented their schools in the English Schools track and field final and some represented their boroughs in this weekends London Youth Games. Mark Newell reports.
ESSA English schools Track and Field Cup Final, Gateshead
Four of our younger members made the long trip to Gateshead to represent their respective schools in the English Schools Track and field final.
In the Junior girls final Natasha Sinha ran a pb in the a string 800m, recording a time of 2:25.8 to finish in second place. In the b string,
Florence Savage ran a massive pb to claim second place with a time of 2:36.9. Fiona Basham was close to her best time when placing 5th in the a string 1500m in a time of 5:12.5. F
lorence also threw 7.54 in the shot and Natasha threw 16.02 in the discus. The three girls should be pleased with their efforts as they helped their school to first place out of 12 teams.
Whilst still only a junior, Juvenal Iragba competed for his school in the Inter boys final. He ran a great 800m race to record a pb of 2:10.8. He also threw the discus a distance of 31.00m.
London Youth Games
A number of our under 15's were representing either the boroughs of Greenwich or Lewisham in this years London Youth Games Track and Field Finals at Crystal Palace.
Places were awarded depending on performance in each event with the best gaining 32 points down to 1 point for last.
The track races for the first time had heats and finals with the winners of each of the five heats plus the 3 fastest losers going through to the final.
Daryl Neita had an excellent day representing Lewisham. She came second only to Dina Asher Smith of Blackheath and Bromley Harriers and then went on to win the Long jump with a huge jump of 5.11m.
Juvenal Iragaba was completing a tough weekend, having made the long trip to Gateshead the previous day to compete in the English Schools Track and Field Cup final.
Juvenal won his heat of the 400m with a seasons best of 57.7 but was unable to reproduce this in the final due to a slight niggle in his hamstring.
Steven Ball missed out on making it to the final in the 800m by just under a second whilst in the field events Charlie Murphy was only a few centimetres away from picking up a medal when finishing in 4th place in the shot.
Sophie Parks easily won her heat of the 800m's but in a very exciting final she was just edged out into 2nd place on the line.
British Masters Championship
There were some good performances in awful conditions at the British Masters Championships in Cardiff.
Results are not yet published, so we'll have a more comprehensive report shortly. However, we do know that Helen Daniel won the W45 discus, while Ray Daniel came second in a closely contested 800m which saw the top four finish within a second of each other. Ray lost out in the last 10 metres with a time of 2:16.05.
Barry Ferguson gained a gold and there were also second place performance. We'll provide all the details shortly.
Southern Counties Veterans League
The clubs veterans performed well again in the Southern Counties Veterans League at Ashford on Monday 28th June.
The women achieved second place, writes Team Manager, Christine Bond. Clare Elms kicked off an evening of first place performances with a win in the 400m, followed by a strong run from Joanne Murphy to finish a close 2nd in 69.8.
Next on the track was the 3000m, again Clare gained the club maximum points with a comfortable win whilst Simone Laidlow, already managing and racing at Kingston a few day's earlier, came in third.
Joanne Murphy is becoming a familiar name in the W50's taking over from Roz Tabor who now dominates the W60's. Without any training since the last walking race, Sandra Gaster `wiggled' her way past a group of walkers she'd tucked in with for a few laps before deciding they were slowing her down to cruise past them to take first.
Maria McDonald covered the W50 beating her previous time by a few seconds. Out on the field. Pauline Boorman, who'd originally came to officiate found herself in the Hammer, dropping not one, but two age categories with a heaver weight finishing third, a result to be proud of on return from a shoulder injury.
Sigi Robert's name was familiar near the top of W50's Hammer with some questions being asked as to the officiating out on the field. Marlow Hadler was also nursing a recent back injury but got in all her throws in the W60's. Missing due to a hamstring injury was Helen Garrett, speedy recovery Helen for the next match!!!
So the overall results showed, like last year, that it will be a close finish to the season with only one match point separating the top three clubs. With 7.5 total points at stake, it's all down to the last match, Friday, 9th July at Bromley. Dartford and Blackheath & Bromley will be pulling out all the stops for the next match as we will! Anyone wishing to come and support vet's team will be welcomed.
Events to be covered, 800m, Discus, Long Jump, 100m, Medley Relay (2x200m, 1x400m, 1x800m) In need of a decent long jumper in W35, W50 & W60's if anyone is interested.
On a more personal note, Bon Jovi was excellent at the O2, apparently Tuesday 22nd June was the best night and I was there! A big thanks to all the Reebok Sisters and Cambridge Harriers Vet's Team who somehow managed to get me a ticket when I couldn't get one! A most memorable night, defiantly worth the hassle of Team Managing!!!
Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon
Chris Rogers was on his adventures this weekend as he took part in the Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon. Chris takes up the story:
"I took part in the Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon (SLMM) at the weekend, with my partner Stevve being a friend from my local climbing/mountaineering scene. Another pairing from that group also took part and we all competed in the Wansfell Class (being the easist running class - it was after all my first ever MM...)
The races started from a less well-known part of the Lake District: Wet Sleddale, almost right next to the M6 near Shap. Saturday was perfect running conditions as the weather was a pleasant mix of high cloud, sunshine and breezy. One navigational error on my part cost Stevve and I a good 20 minutes in relocating to finally dib the control by a dried up tarn (of course it wasn't shown as dry on the map...! Nonetheless, after running the 15.7 km course including one stiff climb over tussocks, becks, etc, by 12:30 we were in camp ready for an afternoon of cooking and sun-bathing. . Day 1 results put us in 31st place of 111 teams. Eventually boredom set in and we got our heads down at 20:00 ! First time I've gone to bed at that time since I was about 8 years old I should think...
Day 2 dawned windy with low cloud. The start led us straight on to a 1,000 ascent over probably 0.5 km, but this played to our strengths as we overtook many competitors on this section. Once on tops we were exposed to the full ferocity of the wind and rain - features that were to worsen throughout the day. In spite of this, my navigation sense was much more tuned in and we made it to the finish line - after some very long legs between controls - by 11:00, ready for out free meal from Wilf's catering...! As we sat in the marquee we couldn't help wondering if it would stand up to the gale force winds...?
In the end, taking into account our improved perfoermance on Day 2 (10th / 111), our final position was 17th of 111; a result I'm proud of for my first MM, and an experience not to be missed. Many learning points were absorbed that I can take forward to the OMM in October for hopefully an even stronger result ! (OMM = Original Mountain Marathon).
Thanks Stevve for putting up with my impatience to keep on running, and for being a great team-mate.
If anyone want s to know more about the Saunders, visit their website on www.slmm.org.uk"
PLEASE NOTE: Could all team maanagers ensure that all reports are sent through ASAP after each meeting. If reports are not recieved, news of the meeting cannot be published!!
If anybody has a query reguarding results or report details, please direct these straight to the relevent team manager.
